A self-described trader, vintner, author, lecturer and student of life, Jerry Bias and his wife Melanie turned their passion for wine into a thriving winery in Nelson Country.

Jerry Bias was the founder and CEO of Wisdom Oak Winery (formerly Sugarleaf Vineyards), an award-winning boutique winery in North Garden, Virginia. Bias personally planted the first 300 vines in 2002 and actively oversaw the cultivation and quality controls of Wisdom Oak’s grape production.  He also managed the overall business with Wisdom Oak’s talented team. Though he and his wife Melanie sold the business in 2018, they continue to consult with wineries around the country.

Bias grew up in Baltimore where he developed a strong work ethic and abiding commitment to excellence.  He graduated from the McDonogh School and paid his own way through the University of Virginia, earning a degree in International Relations.  Bias achieved success as a trader on Wall Street as a partner at Cyrus Capital Partners where he created the premier trading desk in the boutique distressed investing hedge fund market.  Bias also served as a Board Member of the University of Virginia Investment Management Company (UVIMCO) during a period when the University’s endowment more than doubled. The Bias family lives in Charleston, South Carolina, where he continues to work actively in the financial industry, supporting nonprofits and nurturing new and upcoming brands.
